Therapy For Families
Navigating Gender Transition
with Cal Klingensmith, LCSW
A trans man myself, I’ve spent years working with trans teens, their parents, and families because transition impacts more than one person at a time.
Are you trying to support your child while feeling scared you might get it wrong?
Does it feel like no one gave you a roadmap for this change?
When a teen comes out, families usually feel overwhelmed. Parents may wonder if this is a phase, worry about safety or the future, or are unsure how to be supportive but afraid of making mistakes. Teens can get frustrated by the pace of acceptance, or anxious about navigating a gendered world. Its a time when communication can break down just when it matters most.
Families Come to Me When They Experience
“ok, now what do I do next…”
Wanting to know that their kid is ok
Feel like they’re walking on egg shells
Worry about next steps
Tension at home
Anxiety about the future
School or social stress
Feeling stuck
A withdrawn or frustrated teen
How My Therapy Supports Families During Transition
I work with parents, teens, or both, depending on what feels right. Sometimes we meet individually. Sometimes we come together as a team. We focus on understanding gender, managing anxiety, and improving communication so everyone feels heard and supported.
Approaches I Use
-
Helps strengthen trust and communication between parents and teens during a high-stress transition.
-
Supports emotion regulation and distress tolerance for both teens and parents when feelings run high.
-
Helps each person understand their internal reactions, fears, and protective responses.
-
Provides clear, accurate information about trans experiences so families feel less lost and more confident.
-
Connect with others who are navigating similar challenges.
I am currently running a Trans Support Group. If interested, reach out for more details.
Transition raises practical, emotional, and relational questions. Therapy creates space to explore and build a shared plan.

About Me
About Cal Klingensmith, LCSW
My work with families is grounded in clarity, collaboration, and respect for everyone involved.
I’m a trans guy and have worked extensively with trans and queer teens and their families in private practice, community mental health, and academic settings. Sessions are structured but flexible, with space for questions, fears, and real conversations. Together, we focus on helping parents feel more confident and teens feel more supported.
Outside of therapy, I love skiing, cycling, rec softball and games of all kinds. I’m a parent to a young toddler and a native New Yorker. If your family is looking for guidance during this transition, I’d be glad to connect.
